In conversation with Parul Gulati

The gorgeous and talented actress and entrepreneur, Parul Gulati is from Haryana. She studied there till the age of 17, went to a Hindi medium school in fact but she groomed herself and learnt English after she moved to Mumbai. She calls herself an ‘ignorant child’ who had no idea when at the age of 17, she was spotted on Facebook and she came to Mumbai.

When she first came to Mumbai, she was doing a small series, she stayed there, did few ads and then worked for TV commercials. Then, she bagged her first Punjabi film while she was appearing for her second year exams. After doing the movie, she went to the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts, London to study acting. She stayed in London for around 6 months and decided that this is what she wants to do i.e. acting. That’s when she got her first series, POW by Nikhil Advani. “I also worked in Haq Se from Alt Balaji.

In-born Talent or Training

The pretty lass feels that initially it’s juts talent which needs some polishing. You may be good at something like singing for example but then when you get training, you’ll do much better.

Important Qualities and Personality Traits

As actors, I think you should be open to learning first of all because every time you’ll work with different people, you shouldn’t restrict yourself. ‘Sky is the limit when you’re an artist be it singing, dancing or acting. So, it’s a combination of these 2-3 things and if imagination can go anywhere then you can also go anywhere with the character.

Approach towards Career

“I always look at the characters and that’s the main thing because at times, every project can’t be nice but if a character is nice, it stays with people for years to come. I’ve had people come up to me for ‘Haq Se’ as it was path breaking for me as an actor.”

Importance of Luck

“Luck is very important. At times, you can have all the talent in the world. You can be the most good looking person, you can have everything going for you but luck is very important. If I weren’t lucky, I wouldn’t have been able to come to Mumbai.”

Overcoming Obstacles

“I have a company, Nish Hair. It’s an e-commerce company which I started 2 years back and my plan is to make it the biggest e-commerce venture when it comes to hair extensions in India. I also get a chance to make people happy especially the ones who have Alopecia or those who are suffering from Cancer. I started with it randomly but it is a great feeling to see that it’s changing people’s lives.”

So, whenever I am feeling low, I focus on this as it helps me stay motivated. I am passionate about hair styling and it helps me explore the creative side. But apart from that, having faith in yourself and accepting the fact that ups and downs will be a part of your life is something that should keep you going.

Generating New Ideas being an Entrepreneur

She believes in being open to learning. When you are open to learning, you get to learn more and that’s how you get new ideas. It’s important to be a good listener.

Fitness

Parul is into Kalaripayattu, which is South Indian martial arts. She does it on and off but apart from that, she does weight training and her mother is a yoga teacher so Parul does yoga as well to stay fit.

Suggestions for Aspiring Actors

“Stop fearing rejection because as actors, we do get rejected at different points. Be open to criticism and in today’s time, there are no rules, you can be a star in any field, it just doesn’t have to be acting as in films. You can do good work in ads, be famous while doing web series or your own YouTube channel.”
